{Creativity Corner} Fearless

January 22nd, 2010 by Ami

writing_notesDo you ever feel like fear is holding you back? Fear can be a powerful force in keeping us from reaching our goals. Believe me, fear has had it’s hold over me before and I’m sure it will come along again. Any time we take steps toward doing something new or unknown, it’s likely that fear will show up. How we react to that fear is what will determine our success.

This week’s Creativity Corner prompt takes us out of that fear and into the realm of fearlessness. Take some time to contemplate your fears, then write to the following prompt:

Fearless

What would your life look like if you were fearless. What would you do, say or be if there was nothing holding you back? What goals would you set if fear wasn’t a factor?

Imagine what fearlessness might produce in your life and write about what your fearless dreams look like.

When you’re finished, please feel free to share a paragraph or two of your writing in the comments or post the exercise on your own blog and leave a comment here with a link to your writing. Remember, these are exercises. The results don’t have to be perfect. But to benefit from them, you actually have to do the work. Now head to your corners and come out writing!

What would I do if I were fearless? Two years ago I started working on a book about blacks who served during WW II. In the last four months I’ve found it hard to get motivated to finish my research and interview the few remaining veterans I want to highlight in this book.
I find excuses not to write. Each day I spend hours checking my email, surfing the net, then I have to walk the dog, load and unload the dishwasher, do the laundry, fold clothes, watch my favorite soap operas and go get my car inspected. Nowhere in that schedule does there seem to be any time to write. If I were fearless I would carve out time within a 24-hour day to write – I’m writing right now. If I were fearless I would focus on what I need to do to finish the book proposal and finish the book. If I were fearless I would stop making excuses and follow my dream to write, write, and write.

Oh, does this one hit close to home. If I were fearless: I would not be terrified of failure, I would not be terrified that I cannot actually write anything people would want to read, and I would not be terrified that I’ll never get published.
I would: finish the three books that I’ve started and keep floating around in my head nagging me. Then, I would actually attempt to get them published.
Eeep, I can actually feel the fear in my stomach just typing this!

Sharon – Thanks for visiting Write Out Loud and leaving a comment. I visited your blog post on fearlessness and loved it. Thanks for playing along!

Kat – I think it hits home for all of us at some point. You took the first step in acknowledging the fear. Can you do just one thing today to start moving past it? Maybe pull out one of those books and take a few notes on where the story line is headed? Thanks for being so honest and open and for joining in on this prompt!
